Our Story

OUR STORY

It was a stormy night and the power in the house was out.  There was a knock at the door… “Who is it?” asked Gritty. “Pizza Bums delivery…”

Well, that’s our story. Okay, not really.  Other than it being nighttime, everything else has nothing to do with our story. It wasn’t even stormy.  But I hope it caught your attention, because the real story of how Pizza Bums got started is even more exciting.

December 30th 2016 – The day that the idea for Pizza Bums was born.  I was back on the island of Barbados making my annual migration south (running away from the cold dark cloud that hovers over the Ohio valley called winter.) Lots of local family were at the house and the question on my mind was, “What’s for dinner?”  It was a Friday and anyone who lives in the U.S or spends any amount of time there knows that Friday night is often junk food night.  So I went to the store in search of some toppings that everyone would like.  Well, by the time I got back home, the pizza making was already in progress.  Michael, my nephew, was at the helm (no, not on a boat, working the oven.) He was so impressed with the remarkable speed in which my portable pizza oven was able to bake a pizza that he exclaimed, “Dis oven ain’t no joke” (in Bajan vernacular.)

Seeing how he was running back and forth making pizzas, I said.. “Let’s sell pizza on the beach this Monday”. January 2nd.

LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN!

With only two days to make a crazy idea of selling pizzas on the beach on an island where most businesses are closed on Sunday and Monday, January 2nd, 2017 was going to take a lot of ingenuity and ambition, but we were determined.  With my nephew (the pizza maker) who is also a carpenter, tailor and pretty much a “jack of all trades” and a master of none, 🙂 a brother who is an artist that could design logos, coupons, shirts, truck signage (oh, did I mention the truck? More about that later), and great marketing ideas.

By Monday we were ready.  We built the cabinetry that would act as our base to make our pizza, made our sauce, picked up a lot more toppings, made dough to roll and even had coupons to hand out to everyone advertising the great deal we were offering.  My hope was to sell 10 pizzas… Follow us on Instagram to find out how we did.

BACKGROUND

I love the beach, and as a boy some may even have considered me somewhat of a beach bum, hence the name, Pizza Bums- a combination of my love of pizza and the lifestyle that is reminiscent of a simpler time in life.  The life we all crave for.
